These eland may be looking like placid animals, and they are. But do not misjudge them. They are huge and as such they are powerful animals. I have a motto of not disturbing the animals unduly. In fact, I am normally very aware of their emotions.
But this time I misjudged them. I did not pick up on the tension in those ears which are a sure sign of the alertness. I also did not think about the reason why they were standing in the tallest grass in the park.
They had their backs to me. They were grazing. About 10 of them, including two little ones. I was trying to get a decent shot from under the trees, when suddenly they were spooked from the other side and came charging past me. It sounded like the running of hooves in a horse race, all within meters past me.
I am still trying to get my heart out of my throat.

Thank you Gunda Horstmann for your kind proposal
Yep, that's life of a wildlife photographer. Nice to read that you're stil alive and kicking.
The shot is a wonderful one, beautiful light, great pose. Well worth the fear.......
exciting story!! i'm glad you were not run over! beautiful shot of the elands, too! i like that dreamy little "smile" on the one that's in front, and the "parallel" horns and ears look great! greetings, sabine.
I'm glad to hear that you are intact after this dangerous adventure. Through your courage your are succesful in making a wonderful pic. My compliments.
Greetings, Karin
I appreciate that it must be a very difficult animal to capture.
But I really dont think this is as good as your other wildlife images in the Gallery & in Voting at the moment.
I find that the 2 animals being so close together makes them look a bit odd, really needed more seperation between them.
In my opinion due to the fact there's 2 animal standing behind eachother the picture get a little too cluttered, the animals can not be clearly distincted from eachother.
Good story though !! 8-))
