Los origenes de este Real Sitio se remontan al año 1450, cuando el Rey EnriqueIV de Castilla, mando construir una ermita dedicada al Arzobispo San Ildefonso.
Se cuenta que la gran devoción a San Ildefonso, fue debida a que se libró de un grave peligro en una de sus cacerías por los montes de Valsaín.
Existen en los Jardines, 26 Fuentes Monumentales, todas ellas con fantasticos Juegos de Aguas y con personajes e Historias Mitologicas propias.
