This is a shot of mating multicoloured Asian ladybirds.
The species is native to Asia (Siberia, Himalaya, Japan to China) and has been extensively introduced by man in the USA and Europe for biological and effective control of various aphid species in greenhouses, crop fields and gardens.
However, it has also brought with it several negative effects. Its establishment appears to decrease the diversity of native ladybird species.
Dutch name : Veelkleurig Aziatisch Lieveheersbeestje
German name : Asiatischer Marienkäfer
Latin name : Harmonia axyridis (var. succinea)
A big thanks to Deryck for the kindly nomination of this picture.
Hey, hey,hey...shouldn't that be in the nude channel...:-))
Excellent close up...pinsharp and well composed.
Thank you very much for your additional informations on ladybirds. I would have considered them as the normal European bugs. Will from now on have a closer look at them. Great...your daily lesson in zoology.
what a beautiful shot of the little immigrant ; ))! their glossy backs look just terrrific – as though polished! and i think the male and female can even be told apart: black face mask – female , white face mask – male! about two years ago almost every ladybug i saw seemed to be one of those many-spotted asian ones. a couple of years ago, though, it changed again, i think, and last year there were just so many seven-spots again!! greetings, sabine.
