Some weeks ago we noticed an Oryx quite far from the rest of the herd, lying in some very thick grass. From what we could see, it looked as if she had just had baby. It was not very clear though. The Oryx normally hide away after giving birth and hide their young ones for several weeks. It is uncommon for a female to roam by herself.
Today we encountered this one. She was totally alone and very far from the herd. She stood up and watched us closely. We believe she was hiding a little one close by.
The Oryx, or Gemsbok as it is known in South Africa, is well adapted to live in the desert. It can go without water for long periods and can raise their body temperature up to 45°C in order to reduce evaporation.
