Physalis ist der wissenschaftliche und auch der gebräuchliche Name für die Kapstachelbeere, ein beliebtes, schmackhaftes, vitaminreiches und sehr gesundes Beerenobst. Die Kapstachelbeere (P. peruviana) wird vielfach in Südafrika angebaut, stammt aber aus den peruanischen Anden in Südamerika, weswegen der ebenfalls verwendete Name "Andenbeere" besser passt. Bei der Namensgebung war möglicher Weise ohnehin nicht "Kap" wie "Kap der guten Hoffnung" gemeint sondern "Cape" wie "Umhang".
