Cape Horn - from the safety of our big ship

Cape Horn is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard.
It was an almost unreal feeling for me to have arrived at this infamous point of land and stretch of water - never dreamt I would get there (especially since our sailboat is only 9 meters long, so sailing there would have been suicidal).

Best wishes for your Sunday .... and thank you for all your visits and comments.

What a scenery, but the sea seems to be calm.
Fantastic shot, of a fantastic area.
In two weeks I´m also on a cruise, but not in so
    hazardous surroundings (Mediterranean).
    many hugs

although it looks rough, it seems to be a calm day on the water. a fine shot from you and i think, that it is a real adventure, still today, to ship around cape hoorn.

That's amazing Adele and thank you so much for showing us and taking us on your journey too. I can see everyone wrapped up warm against the elements there although it does look relatively calm for the moment. It is amazing how some sailors did the journey in long ago days and made it back to tell the tale when they didn't have modern boats, sat nav and radio contact!
    Regards
    Sally

    greetings, Inge

so we are finally there!! the horn itself looks quite harmless, it seems! but that's probably just an illusion, and one that's probably fooled many sailors of ancient times, too! love how you captured the deck of this "safe modern ship" in the foreground, with all those "thermoregulated" ; )) people staring out into the distance to get a glimpse of the notorious cape ; ))! i bet if the sailors of ancient times had had cameras, their shots would have looked almost the same. different clothing, a less trustworthy ship, but the same gathering on deck, the same reverent glances… hugs, sabine.

Looks pretty chilly on board of the ship, but I guess the wide view makes it easy to forget the cold.
    Nice shot of cape Horn.
