The Living Forest (189) : Common Hawthorn

Common Hawthorn is a very thorny bush or small tree that is often extensively planted as a hedge plant, especially for agricultural use, but can also frequently be found in the forest as a solitary grower.

It blooms in spring with abundant white flowers.
However, these flowers have a faint scent of rotting meat, which results in pollination of the flowers by flies rather than by bees.

Dutch name : Eenstijlige Meidoorn
German name : Eingriffeliger Weißdorn
Latin name : Crataegus monogyna
