The Oystercatcher is an European wader.

Originally, it’s a coastal species, that is still found around the coastline, but since the mid seventies of last century, the Oystercatcher has increasingly colonised inland rivers and lochs.
The first observation for these birds nesting on grassland away from the coast happened already in 1940.

Dutch name : Scholekster
German name : Austernfischer
Latin name : Haematopus ostralegus

Location : Nature reserve ‘Noordelijk Eiland’ at Wintam (Belgium)

: )))) i'm smiling because of his content, knowing smile! he's obviously keeping a secret, and i think i know what it is: judging from your interesting text, he's a great adaptable fellow who despite his very "specialized" name, oystercatcher) he still manages to survive in completely oysterless ; ) continental areas! must have a sunny disposition and a tough, flexible stomach! ; )) eating snails and wading through river reed these days… great shot as always! greetings, sabine.
