The Living Forest (178) : Walking Tree (2)

Here’s a second picture of this striking natural phenomenon.

Somewhere in Belgium, there’s an old and unique pine forest, where lots of ‘walking trees’ can be spotted.

Over there, a large number of Scots Pines have visible roots up to 1,5m high above the soil, due to erosion of the (sand)hill on which they stand.
To maintain its handhold, the tree roots must grow down deeper and deeper into the soil year after year.
It looks as if those trees are making a walk through the forest this way, hence their name.

Needless to say that in the distant past it was believed that these trees were a perfect residence for a variety of fairy tale figures…….

Dutch name : Grove den
German name : Waldkiefer
Latin name : Pinus sylvestris

Location : Kabouterbos(°) at Kasterlee (Belgium)
(°): ‘Kabouterbos’ literally means : ‘Gnome forest’
