It’s breeding time!

The Eurasian Coot likes to built its nest of dead reeds near the riparian vegetation on freshwater lakes.

A female lays usually 5 to 10 eggs, sometimes 2 or 3 times per season. Both male and female breed on the nest (23 to 25 days).

Usually only a few young survive because they are frequent prey for birds such as herons and gulls.

Dutch name : Meerkoet
German name : Blässhuhn
Latin name : Fulica atra

A very fine capture of this beautiful coot in the reeds and with the reflections in the water. So sharp and such nice eye contact .... would be fantastic if you could drop in on the young ones later on.
