Freedom means survival....

Greece
Region of Epirus (Western Greece)
Zagorochoria villages

Zagorochoria is a bunch of nearly fifty villages all scattered in the most mountainous region of Greece, in Epirus(Western Greece).Their origin goes as back as the 17th century and their remote site on mountainous peaks secured for them a comfortable degree of freedom during Ottoman occupation. The locals not only survived but thrived developping a remarkable degree of agriculture, cattle and wool and craft art. But what they were particularly famous for was their masonry skill, building solid stone houses, cobblestone paths and bridges that have survived heavy winters, tones of snow, floods and even earthquaques, Nowadays, the majority of these villages are accessible with good roads and enjoy turism and winter sports.

In the photo Aristi, one of the most developped villages.

…and once having managed to survive on one's own keeps the hunger and need for freedom alive for all times and empowers the survivors' morale!! fascinating stuff on a fascinating subject, alexander! those tough old villages in the mountains… they look and sound like a region very worth visiting! greetings, sabine.

They knew how and where to build to be safe from invaders and natures cataclismic events. In some ways it is sad that now they are open to all and sundry with tourism coming in, but I am sure that it helps their way of life and survival.
    An excellent scene.
