Ancient Petra, the Red Gem of the Jordanian desert, was the capital of the Nabatean civilization the flourished from 500BC to 2nd century AC and then, totally destroyed by earthquake, was engulfed in history's abyss till about 1830 when its ruins were detected by travellers in the midle of the desert.
Maybe the most fascinating feature is crossing, on foot the Siq, a famous canyon of about a mile length that winds beautifully till the exit where the legendary monument of Al Khazneh(The Treasury) stands.The walls of the canyon extend from 90 to 180m height and in many parts the width does'nt exceed the 3m. The canyon is a result of tectonic forces.
Petra, in 2007, was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the world.
