Christian faith in Cappadocia 2

Turkey
Cappadocia region in Anatolia.
The photo is a sample of the subterranean caves and churches that Orthodox Christians built when this region was a Holy land for pilgrimage and voluntary exile for penitence and pray, especially during the years of the Byzantine empire.
It's amazing that, from the very early beginning of man's existence, wall design has been expressed not only as art practice but also as a need for sentimental outlet..
(For more details, please refer to the previous photo in the gallery. Thank you very much and sorry for the trouble).

…yes, i perfectly understand what you mean by "sentimental outlet": even now the emotianal impact of the portrayals is so strong! one literally feels drawn to the twosomes, especially the big one presented in a heart shape and seemingly looking us in the eye – fascinating and moving!! love the natural looks and subtle rendering! greetings, sabine.

These images must have been quite stunning when they were first painted, and they have survived in remarkable condition.
    best wishes,

It must be amazing to see these places, how they were maybe hewn out of the solid rocks and then painted with all the frescos.
A good picture that shows the cave well.

    :))

another testament to the survival of the tumultuus
history of the area ... another fine example of the
paintings - beautiful and I imagine once quite vivid
    in their colours !!!
    Greetings, Adele
