Southern Yellow billed Hornbill

Definitely one of my most favourite birds. We were driving down a gravel road when this hornbil suddenly appeared in front of us. He flew over the road, keeping up with the slow pace we were driving and then suddenly we saw him diving down and catching a locust in flight. He landed on a patch of open ground and proudly had his lunch, not worried about me clicking away.

I tried to capture the motion by using a slower shutter speed. He didn't sit still for a second, making the shot extremely difficult

Yeah, sometimes they don't like to stay still for a moment, although they would be perfect models.

His mum didn't teach him to behave at the table:))
And his dinner seems larger then his mouth:)
I love the creative blur though: makes the picture more convincing that the dinner is really delicious and the bird shivers with delight:)

looks like the catch of the day to me – well done, hornbill! AND well done, photographer!! ; )) seems as you were both doing a great job here, deryck! the only one obvioulsy down on his luck is the hapless locust – life can be so unfair sometimes! ; ))) greetings, sabine. p.s.: love his banana shaped and -colored bill, and how he appears to be looking our way – what an expressive eye!

wonderful shot, Deryck - phantastic birds, these hornbills. I saw my first one in Kuala Lumpur Bird Park (was the spectator during our dinner there in the restaurant............)

he is a beauty - and so is his big catch ... great capture of this striking bird having his dinner ... the blurred head really shows how he struggles to get it down !!!
