I think of all the insects, butterflies have the best sense of humour. I can just "hear" them laughing as they mock me chasing after them with a camera, trying to catch a shot. In my case, it is exactly that - catching a shot - because as soon as I get the butterfly within in focus, as I'm about to press the button, he closes his wings or he flies away. But in the end, I think I got one or two decent shots

I wish you all a wonderful Sunday

Adele Oliver, 5.05.2012 at 22:01h

Your story sounds so familiar, Deryck - I am hopeless at catching a decent image of one .... but you managed beautifully ... splendid these colours and markings, and so vivid on these softly coloured leaves.
cheers, Adele

Vera M. Shulga, 6.05.2012 at 5:05h

That's right. And what about my little camera! .. I have to go to the closest meter butterfly to get a good picture and at the same time so as not to have been your shadow.
Beautiful butterfly on a beautiful background!
Nice Sunday!
Greetings, Vera

Astrid Buschmann, 6.05.2012 at 7:33h

i bet the elusive behavior is his revenge against mankind who gave him his utterly ridiculous (his thoughts, not mine!) name: "yellow pansy? yellow pansy?? you can't be serious! so there's a little yellow, black and purple on my wings – for crying out loud, does that make me A FLOWER?!?" ; ))) great capture of the ethereal little beauty, though, deryck! i'm fascinated with the leaves he's sitting on: what unusual textures! cool and primeval looking… greetings, sabine. p.s.: the only time i ever try taking pictures of butterflies is those sunshiny last days in october: the prospect of a soon-to-come cold winter gets them really stiff and slow and melancholic… i shamelessly take advantage of that – mean, in know… ; )))

I know about the difficulties to catch a picture from butterflies with open wide wings. It is nice that you got it. Well captured. I've never seen a butterfly like that.

In such cases, you should always spray a little adhesive onto the possible landing site.
The leaves look like ice-covered.
Overall, a nice photo which I like a lot.
Cheers - A.

Jenipher Baker, 6.05.2012 at 14:46h

Your persistence won out Deryck and the result is a fine shot of the butterfly with good details and colours :-)
cheers Jeni
