Humboldtpinguine sind in Südamerika an den Küsten von Chile und Peru zu Hause. Die mittelgroßen Pinguine sind mit vier bis fünf Jahren erwachsen. Durch Überfischung, Wasserverschmutzung und das Sammeln des Vogelkotes als Guano-Dünger sind sie akut bedroht.

Sie stehen unter dem Schutz des Washingtoner Artenschutzabkommens und sind im Tierpark Sababurg Botschafter einer bedrohten Art.
Seitdem sie ihr schönes neues naturnah gestaltetes Gehege haben, fühlen sie sich dort pudelwohl und haben sogar im Sommer 2011 für Nachwuchs gesorgt.
