Das Gefängnis wurde 1872 gebaut und bis 1890 als territoriales Gefängnis verwendet, wenn Wyoming ein Staat wurde. Die Anlage wurde 1890 als das Wyoming State Penitentiary umgebaut. 30 Jahre lang hielt das Gebäude notorische Outlaws wie Butch Cassidy, Dan Parker, Clark "the Kid" Pelton und Ellijah Canary gefangen. Über 1 000 Männer und 12 Frauen von mehreren Nationalitäten, religiösen Herkünften und Berufstätigkeiten sind durch den ehernen Gittertüren durchgelaufen.
