This is the quintessence of the indian sub-continent steam railway atmosphere : an SP/S (Standard Passenger Superheated) BESA-design 4-4-0 on its way through the Punjab plain. At that time (1997), the engine was already 84 years old but still in very good shape (one can imagine contemporary diesels or electrics in 80 years : not one remaining bolt !).
The end of steam traction in Pakistan and loss of this destination due to political troubles are definitely the worst event of my photographer career...
