Einmal im Jahr wird der kleine Ort Sonepur am Gandak-Fluss zu einem der größten Viehmärkte in Indien, einem der wenigen, auf dem Elefanten verkauft werden. Die Mela findet am Vollmond des Monats Kartik (Oktober/November) statt. An diesem Tag gilt es als besonders glückversprechend, zusammen mit den Elefanten ein Bad zu nehmen.
