Wenn man über die Brooklyn-Brücke in den Osten von Manhattan gelangt sieht man linker Hand die allseits bekannten Wolkenkratzer, aber rechter Hand erkennt man eine Gruppe von mittelhohen, ziegelfarbenen Gebäuden von ähnlicher Bauform, eingebettet in eine grüne Umgebung. Sie sind ein Ergebnis von Sanierungsmaßnahmen der früheren Bebauung, die nicht längre den modernen Bedürfnissen genügten. Die Gebäude stehen in einem recht großen Abstand, was man von den übrigen Vierteln her so nicht kennt. Damit lassen sie Platz genug für Grünflächen, die sehr gut geeignet sind für soziale Freiluftaktivitäten der Kinder oder unter den übrigen Bewohnern. Der Zugang zu den Grünflächen ist nur den Anwohnern gestattet und es gibt Überwachungen um das Sicherheitsgefühl zu verbessern. Dennoch, dort zu leben ist auch nicht gerade preiswerte. Selbst mit einem Arzteinkommen werden Appartements und damit die Kosten noch mit anderen geteilt.
Bei dem folgenden Foto sieht man die Gebäude an der oberen linken Seite von Manhattan (die Ansicht geht nach Süden), unmittelbar vor all den hohen Wolkenkratzern. Wie man leicht sieht ist diese mittlere Region von New York City durchaus niedrig bebaut. Vielleicht wissen es manche nicht, aber NYC ist nicht ausschließlich mit Hochhäusern bedeckt.

When you enter to the east of Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge you will see left hand side the well known scy scrapers, but left hand side you see a group of mid range brick color buildings in similar shape, amid green environment. These are the come out of a rehabilitation of the former dwellings, no longer sufficient for modern demands. The buildings are within quite a distant, not known from other quarters of Manhattan, thus leaving enough room for green areas well suitable for outdoor social activities, for children or within the inhabitants. Access to the green areas is only permitted to those who live there, and it is surveilled to ensure security. Living there is nonetheless not that cheap. Even physicians share their apartment to reduce the costs.
On the following foto you can see the buildings at the upper left edge of manhattan (this is viewed to the south), right in front of all the tall scy scrapers. As you can see, in this middle region the height of the buildings is quite low, thus, NYC not well known to some, isn't totally covered with sky scrapers.

Ja so Bilder von New York sieht man nicht so oft, hab zwei Jahre dort gewohnt, teilweise auch in der Naehe von den Projects...

Danke für den Link, der ist ja grandios und mir leider nicht unter den Vorschauen aufgefallen, weil dort das Viertel im Schatten liegt. Ich meine, 1992 stand dieses gestreifte Hochhaus noch nicht da. Nimmt ja ganz schön dem Viertel das Licht :-(. Vogo, 6.11.2004 at 19:00h
