Eine der originalen Spezialitäten der madeirensischen Küche ist der Schwarze Degenfisch, der hier Espada genannt wird. Er wird meist als gebratenes Filet serviert, typischerweise zusammen mit halbierten Bananen. Dieser Fisch lebt in etwa 1.500 Metern Tiefe.
