Der Heißluftballon ist ein Luftfahrzeug nach dem archimedischen Prinzip, „leichter als Luft“. Im Gegensatz zum Gasballon wird die Gewichtsreduzierung dadurch erreicht, dass ein großes Luftvolumen erwärmt wird, wodurch sich sein spezifisches Gewicht reduziert. Der Gewichtsverlust des erwärmten Luftvolumens entspricht dem Gesamtgewicht des Ballons (Ballonhülle und Nutzlast).
