C'est Adrien Gerlache, membre de l'expédition Belgica de 1898, qui lui donna le nom de Charles Lemaire, alors consul. La traversée de ce canal, d'une longueur de quelque 6 kilomètres et d'une largeur de 720 m en son point le plus étroit, est considérée comme l'un des points culminants de tout voyage en Antarctique.
