Memorial to Communism in Prague - Olbram Zoubek

The Memorial to the victims of Communism (Czech: Pomník obětem komunismu) is a series of statues in Prague commemorating the victims of the communist era between 1948 and 1989. It is located at the base of Petřín hill, Újezd street in the Malá Strana or the Lesser Town area.

It was unveiled on the 22 May 2002, twelve years after the fall of communism, and is the work of Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek and architects Jan Kerel and Zdeněk Holzel. It was supported by the local council and Confederation of Political Prisoners (KPV).

It shows seven bronze figures descending a flight of stairs. The statues appear more "decayed" the further away they are from you - losing limbs and their bodies breaking open. It symbolises how political prisoners were affected by Communism.

There is also a bronze strip that runs along the centre of the memorial, showing estimated numbers of those impacted by communism:

what an impressive and heart-rending work of art this is!! it triggers all kinds of images, impet and emotions, one of them being the urge to open my arms and comfort them to ease the walking deads' pain and make them feel whole again… an impetus, i'm sure, that's due to both the expressiveness of the work and your way of depicting it! greetings, sabine. p.s.: i like the quote leonid came up with! its hilarious absurdity is so, so true… i also like that you included the little "don't step on!" sign in your image – touch of absurdity lurking in there, somewhere, too… ; )

Six millions of poor and innocent Soviet victims during the last war have been very expensively redeemed with a brutal Warsaw Military Pact that "chained"East Europe for nearly half a century confirming the rule that as long as basic individual ingredients, such as greediness for leadership supremacy and expansion, remain unchanged there will be a lot more victims to be left behind to suffer unjustly...And that, of course, applies to both parts.
A really morbid monument that gives the creeps and very well presented in your photo, Lawson
