
Basswood, linden, lime tree...they're all the same genus. Here a huge American Basswood (Tilia americana) dominates a hillside on the shore of a small Michigan lake. The characteristic side sprouts are visible. Surrounding smaller trees are hop hornbeam, hickory, oak, and cherry, among others.
