El lugar más angosto asciende por 90 km, y el más amplio lugar alrededor de 240 km en el Chile continental. La extensión de longitud de Chile corresponderia reflejando la distancia en Europa, mas o menos a la distancia entre el medio de Dinamarca y el desierto Sahara. Por la larga extensión Norte-Sur por más 39 grados de anchura, y tambien las diferencias de nivel considerables en dirección Oeste-Este Chile muestra una gran variedad de zonas de vegetación y clima.

Chile is a country, which extends on the South American continent over 4,200 kilometres in north-south direction along the Anden and the Pacific ocean (if you count the Antarctic part in addition approx. 8,000 km), but has an average width of only approx. 180 kilometres. Chile ist ein Land, das sich auf dem südamerikanischen Kontinent über 4.200 Kilometer in Nord-Süd-Richtung entlang der Anden und des Pazifischen Ozeans erstreckt (zählt man den Antarktischen Teil hinzu ca. 8.000 km), aber durchschnittlich nur ca. 180 Kilometer breit ist. Die engste Stelle beträgt im kontinentalen Chile (ohne Antarktis) 90 km, die breiteste Stelle etwa 240 km. Die Längenausdehnung Chiles entspricht auf Europa übertragen in etwa der Entfernung zwischen der Mitte Dänemarks und der Sahara. Aufgrund der langen Nord-Süd-Ausdehnung über mehr als 39 Breitengrade, aber auch der beträchtlichen Höhenunterschiede in West-Ost-Richtung weist Chile eine große Vielfalt an Klima- und Vegetationszonen auf.
