Conditions in Britain led to a huge increase in a number of convicts , British prisons were full so convicts were sent to faraway colonies. As many as 50,000 passed through Hyde Park Barracks (Sydney, Australia) between 1819 - 1848.

The barracks played a significant role in housing, sorting and assigning the convicts. Built to hold 600 men, at times it housed up to 1300.
Most convicts served their sentences and blended into society as "free" citizens.
