Early morning at Shivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, North India

As in all holy places of India there is also in Rishikesh no need of opportunities to lift your karma by supporting the numerous beggars.

India may appear economically seen as very poor but spiritually it has to offer a lot. Eespecially for Westerners tired by purely consumption orientated society and the well regulated boring life there. That's the basic guidline of Indian self-understanding, repeated again and again. India, so strongly locked in spirituality means for the rest of the world a unique example that attracts attention and admiration.
Rishikesh is famous for its many ashrams and yoga centres. In the West it became well known by the Beatles, who there visited their guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who taught them correct breathing and afterwards could afford a private helicopter . Still nowadays Rishikesh is a meeting point for Westerners here learning about yoga and meditation, studying Hindu religion and philisophy or trying to reach enlightenment with the help of drugs in order to widen their spirit or loose it.
Also Rishikesh is the starting point for the holy places in Garhwal Himal like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri, Gangotri and Gamukh, source of holy Ganga river.
The place is situated on the banks of Ganga and surrounded by hills at three sides.
Rishikesh consists of two parts. The noisy municipal around the busstand and the calmer Muni-ki-reti across the river. Those many ashrams, pilgrims and sadhus adore Muni-ki-reti with a special charm. Early in the morning there is singing in all ashrams and you can sit there and listen or take part in.
Who stays longer can here dedicate intensively his time to yoga and meditation. The Shivananda Ashram offers twice daily lessons in yoga, starting at 5.30am and 5pm, always around 90 minutes. You can join at any day and are not fixed for a certain period of time. Every evening is Satsang, a meeting of the ashram's inhabitants and visitors with peaceful singing. Smoking of marihuana, also known to insiders as charras, hash, ganja or shit isn't compulsary nor even encouraged. Dealing or using of heroine or other hard drugs is strictly forbidden. Same as induldging or planing of any terrorist activities, prostitution, gambling, celebrating of sex orgies and spitting on the floor should not be executed in the ashram premises. For those activities are more suited places available. But remember the frequent police raids and little comfort of Indian prisons!!!.

This time a hopefully good and rather correct German translation, provided thanks to my dear fc-buddy Osama:

Frühmorgens beim Shivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, Nord-Indien.

    Feiner Titel zum starken Foto, Bin !
    Auch der Text ist überaus interessant.
    PS: Man sollte das Planen von Terroristischen Aktivitäten und das Ausspucken auf den Boden überall auf der Welt strikt verbieten ... nicht nur in Rishikesh.
    Viele Grüsse und weiterhin viel Erfolg und Freude bei der Meditation
    Peter

    @Agnes,
    Dear Agnes, I understand your interest in knowing all those secret places, but I guess it won't be good for the sake of your security if I post it here and you will go there. As USAF is very quickly in dropping bombs on any suspected terrorist hideout. Public naming of sex orgies spots also not advisable as it could mean a big rush to. What would disturb the intimate privacy still prevailing there. But concerning this matter, maybe there are more possibilities in Munich as in all of India. You mentioned the "capitol", it might be such a nice place :-)).

    Please have a nice day in the Bavarian capital, but not unbedingt necessarily in the capitol :-)
    Yours, Bin

    @Piri,

    Dear Bin!
    Lovely picture and even more delightful story about Rishikesh. Wonderful inspiring brake from a desk in Munich full of meaningless paper.

    A small oversight on your part:
    You forgot to add a list of the places more suitable for induldging or planing of any terrorist activities, prostitution, gambling, celebrating of sex orgies and spitting on the floor. Would be good to have!

    Many kind greatings from the Bavarian capitol
    Agnes

    @Petra Sommerlad,
    Petra, not all Indians have the talents to become such world famous mangers or schlitzohr in soul business as Guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi or Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh, who did run in Poona this mixture between vegetarian kloster und fleischeslustig club mediteranée :-)). Most sadhus are modest and completely mittellos, wandering from one holy place to the next, while maybe sometimes sich dabei eine knife stechen durch die tongue.

    @Rob Koch,
    In India ist das erhabene und goettliche always close to the profane und bizarre, the touching and dramatic often near to the betrug or comic .In this way this picture may be ein gut beispiel. In India there are streets to atomic power plants with naked sadhus on it, the body covered with ashes and cow dung in the hair. India still is a fascinating country, travelling there can be hard at times but always rewarding if you keep a sense of humour. If you have any possibility to go and stay there for a while, don't hesitate to go. You won't regret it.

    Best regards from the meditation centre at Wat Samphraya, Banglampoo, Bangkok.
    Bin

  • Robert Koch 09/01/2007 15:06

    Rob
