Its lacking sharpness, as been said before, but while trying to add sharpness you have created quite some colour noise which is visible below the foxes chin in the light hairs.

sorry contra

My initial look at this fox was sitting with my nose about 30 cm from the screen. I like wildlife photos and this one initially did not look right. So I sat back and leaned in my chair to contemplate my vote and the image totally changed. At a meter away the lack of sharpness and the shadows vanished and the patterns of the color were more vivid. Definitely Pro. -archie

SUE THOMPSON, 16.01.2008 at 20:33h

@ archiek. Well done, I have wondered if anyone out there knew that there is such a thing as 'VIEWING DISTANCE' You found that there is. Would any one of us stand really close to an old master to view...no...we would stand back, and the bigger the picture the greater the distance. and the better the painting looks [in most cases *o*]
So...why do we insist on getting so close to our screens to see the pictures on fc.......would you sit 30cm [12 inches app] from our screens to read a letter...no...we have a distance which we are comfortable with. At that distance I think we all find that most of the pictures, imaterial of their content, look sharp and devoid of noise/grain.

May I say thank you to you for putting your honest observations in a comment Archie
. I hope others Read, Mark, Learn and inwardly digest this fact, and when viewing the pictures of others, try it for themselves.
I am not talking out of the back of my head, when in photographic clubs I was a judge, and as such was taugh all about viewing distances, and the way to comment on the work of others without being derogatory to the work or the aurhor.

I agree with your Archie, viewd at a sensible distance this is a supeb picture of the fox.
Go To It Geoff :))))))))))

Ruud van der Lubben, 16.01.2008 at 20:33h

Viewing distance or not,
If we all go and sit 2 meters away from our screens we can probably vote just about ANYTHING into the gallery !

( we would need long arms by the way, to get to our keyboards ) 8-)))

@ Ruud.....perhaps I have the advantage then, our computer screen is app 1 mtr away, set into a cupboard, but then the pic on screen is app. A4 size...so 2 mts would be a bit too far.

Geoff knows that I have not voted on this pic, only added a comment :))))))))

Congratulations on this star.
I did not comment above with the intention of starting a discussion, or creating a controversy. Please consider my comments as my thoughts at the time of the writing about the photo being voted on.
However, I am beginning to see that gallery voting is very important in this community so each comment is important, which is why I did not write this comment until the vote was complete so as not to further influence or prolong any discussion during the voting.
Regards all!
