Matala

Greece
Creta island
Matala
Matala is a small port at the south coast of Creta facing the Libyan sea. It was also the port of the ancient Phestos, a city that flourished during the era of Minoan civilization in the island, at around 2700 BC. It is famous for the caves on it's peninsula rock and cliff that were created during the Neolithic age and at the 50's and 60's were the meeting point of Beats and Hippies from around the world that camped in the caves enjoying the sea, giving music festivals and circulating drugs. By the 70's they were driven away by the church and the military junta. It is reported that even Jack Kerouac spent sometime there while writting "On the Road".
Now the place is a very busy turist resort.

A fascinating place with a great history, both ancient and more modern. It is good that people wish to visit these ancient places, but at the ame tim it seems so sad that they can also be inundated with tourists wanting to look , take a few pictures and then leave....

    :))

a still mysterious and fascinating place ... the people so small beside the impressive rock - from your perspective the open "windows" of the cave and the textures show well.
I was there by scooter in the 80s - and we were the only tourists :-))
    greetings, Adele
