St. George's Church

in the Old Fortress of Corfu

St. George's church is located inside the Old Fortress of Kerkyra/Corfu. The fortress was Venetian and became British in 1815 (after short French and Russian periods).
The church was built in the style of a Doric temple in 1840 by the British military architect Emmett. It was used as a place of worship by the British garrison (Anglican).
In 1864 the Bristish protectorate of the United States of the Ionian Islands merged with Greece, the garrison was handed over to the Greek and St. George's Church was converted into an Orthodox church. IT IS THE ONLY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH ALL OVER GREECE IN THE STYLE OF AN ANCIENT TEMPLE. Today it is still an active Greek Orthodox church, but is also often used as a concert hall for the Ionian University.
Thank you, Waymarking !!!

Exactly, dear Adele, your historic information is acurate and very explicit about this superbe piece of doric temple that eventually ended as Christian Orthodox Church although...not much of affinity and sympathy existed between them. But we have seen the same on other occasions also. Just imagine that, not only Kerkyra but ALL Ionian islands have been offered in 1864 by qeen Victoria to Danish Prince George and Russian Grand Duchess Olga as a wedding present and also as a present for his inauguration to the throne of Greece as George the 1st. What a present!
Bautiful photo and nice view to the sea.
    regards alexander

A great place to get a view of the world. Lots of history in this place, civilizations have come and gone while the building still stands. Good one!
    Regards,
    Archie

"the green, green land, the blue, blue sea, and man (mother and child, in this case ; )) conquering all!" – my first thought… there's so much "dignified glory" in the architecture of the temple and so much "placid grace" in the sea and sky… what a beautiful and well-balanced composition, adele! the mom and child, effortlessly blending in with the stony architecture, but nevertheless breaking the stagnancy and visual silence of the scene and place… – as tiny a detail they may be, they still make the image for me! hugs, sabine.
