... Flüssen gespeist wird und vom Rio Paraguay, der das Gebiet speisende und entwässernde Hauptfluss, durchflossen wird. Darin hat sich ein artenreiches Feuchtgebiet entwickelt.
Mit etwa 230.000 km² Fläche ist das Pantanal fast genauso groß wie die Bundesrepublik Deutschland vor der Wiedervereinigung. Es liegt durchschnittlich nur knapp 95 m über dem Meeresspiegel.
