GIF

The Graphics Interchange Format (abbreviated GIF)is a 256 color file format for image display.

One of the most special characteristics of a GIF file is his animation capacity.

This for example is a GIF-File: image:newmark.gif

You might recognize that you have seen many of them when surfing the internet - and this is indeed the most common use of the GIF-Files: They are created to show banners or advertisements on homepages.

For high resolution image display other file formats are used, because the 256 color limitation doesn't allow to present for example photos in a sufficient quality.
