Extreme beginner

I'm also new to this site!

The way I started was just to SHOOT. I got better the more pictures I took. I also had an experienced mentor who helped me learn things as I became more and more curious, the more I shot. If you can, take photo courses, but I really believe the best thing to do is just shoot. I think photo.net is a good online resource as well. A site for good, professional shots (besides this one) is PDN Photo District News (www.pdnonline.com) and Magnum (www.magnumphotos.com). If you go to PDN and click on their Photo Serve option you can find photographers who specialize in all genres in all parts of the world; and they're pros. Also READ READ READ as much as you can. Study whoever's work you respect and admire and study it a lot. Pick up magazines too. Good luck!

can u make a good living from photography?

Jake, yes it is possible to make a living as a photographer. However it may take a long time to happen, or hay anyone can get lucky and an instant success. Paul has some good suggestions and i'll add to that. try going to public places such as resturants, banks, post office and other such places and ask them if the will hang your photos for free and sale of course!I was lucky to get in when a new resturant opened and the place is now like my own gallery, i change photos regularly as times and seasons change. I also go to Equestrian Horse Shows and Car club rally events where my photos sell VERY well to the participants (but that doesn't get you name out to the world all that well). Someday i might get that photo that will sell to the press or other, never stop trying. I'm also fortunate to know a professional photographer whom does make a great living at her craft, and she is helping me advance mine. take a look at Alison Jones site.
