Disgarding the beauty of your favorite subjects (smile), i would try to use manual focus.
When your camera does not have some, try the selfportrait programm.
For other subjects like monuments try to find a better position to get them vertical. Use a stative.
But, as the most photographers problem (also mine), the best picture is taken before to press the release button.
So, think about the subject and how to realize.
