loss of sharpness due to polarising filter?

Thanks Martin, Rob and Ruud for your responses.
The filter would have been clean when i used as i had only just taken it out of it's packaging, it was brand new and therefore hadn't been exposed to any dirt or grime.
@Rob: It's a circular polariser from Kood and the camera i use is a Canon EOS 20D.
I will try it out again using a tripod to see what happens (allthough i'm almost sure it won't make that much of a difference :o(
@Ruud: ghosh - if you lose sharpness through any filter, does that mean the only option is to photoshop the pics (instead of using a filter)? Can you actually achieve the same effects you would by using a filter in photoshop??
hm... You also put the UV filters in quotes - is it not necessary after all? I have one because it was recommended to me in the camerashop when we bought my camera.
Anyway, thanks again you three for responding and shedding some light on my polarizer problem:o)

kind regards,
Petra
