UV Filters
Could somebody please advise me about the use of a UV filter permanently attached to the lens of my camera? Is it a good idea or a bad idea? I have heard conflicting views.
It's a bit a matter of how you want to look at it.
It is not a bad idea, while the UV function is nowadays not so important anymore, it is always a good way to protect the frons lens of you lens.
You should always keep in mind that when using a good lens, you should also use a good quality UV filter.
Every filter is in some degree deteriorating the quality of your lens, The better filter quality, the less deterioration.

Thank you Ruud. I'll pop off and get a really good UV filter right away.
I would only recommend any UV filter in case of use in rough conditions, like moto cross or similar. The risk of unwanted reflections in the picture is too high and it reduces the amount of light anyway.
A good lenshood is usually the better option.

If you shoot with a digital camera, you don't need any other filters than...
- a circular polarizer
- neutral density filters (e.g. ND8)
- neutral density graduated filters (e.g. ND4 Hard Grad)
...because their effects can not be done by Photoshop.
All other filters are rubbish today.

CPL or ND filter. What do you is better for landscapes and other situations? Thanks
However, the gradient filter can also be replaced in the photo editor.
The ND filter is good for creating the illusion of a moving object (waterfall, river, waves) due to the forced increase in exposure. The CPL filter is good for better rendering of the sky and for leveling (or emphasizing) glare.
