I use a Sony Alpha 100 DSLR. My question;
Are there functional differences between Sony lenses with 8 electronic connections and (older) Minolta lenses with 5 connections. What are the functions of the extra 3 connections?

I think it is about the Autofocus. This will only work with the 8 connectors not with the 5. I just read about these extra connectors in a book one week ago.
The new lenses have 3 more contacts to use ADI-Flash-measuring....
But much lenses with 5 contacts can still be used with ADI

The only differences are ADi (as already said), HSM motor, and old xi motor powered zooms get all needed power from camera body.
Almost all 5 contacts lenses will work perfectly with new alpha bodies, excluding some old Sigma lenses...
