Though I have not yet used Mac myself I'm quite sure that my next computer will be one. Windows Vista convinced me about that...

Hi,

it is like "should I buy Canon or Nikon?". At least, you will not get a final answer.
In the meanwhile there is nothing you can do with a MAC which you cannot do with a WIN - more or less at the same performance. "MAC is better for DTP, multimedia..." is a rumor of the last century, WIN has reached the same level of performance and new MACs use similar HW-structure and components... the biggest difference is the OS.
Both systems have some PRO and CONTRA, you have to check what is important for you.
You like the design of the imac? Check out the offers of WIN-PC, in laptops Sony Vaio are chic, too.
Last and least: Do you have expensive software? By changing the system you cannot use it any more. Do you are willing to swap to another OS?

cheers, Olli

I am on the verge of moving form PC to MAC after about 22 years of using a PC exclusively.

Why - because of the continuous rubbish MS puts out in the way of an operating system. I am fed up with Windows anomolies and quirks that cause me great headaches and far too many wasted hours.

I have honed my use of a PC down from entertainment (read games) to production (read Office and Photo Editing).

Once there was a time when Apple products were quite a bit more in price but not so any more. Also I have stopped measuring a PC's worth by it's Hertz rating.

Yes there will be some of my software which will be abandoned or replaced. That's part of the cost assessment you must consider before you switch!

And lastly, I've never heard a MAC user say "I wish I had a PC".

Hi Anthony,
I've used both MAC and PCs extensively.

In terms of reliability and performance, a MAC far outshines a PC in my opinion. Performance wise, I think a MAC is also much better value for money.

I would though, like to warn you (because I didn't know and nobody told me) that MACs need a bit of tinkering with before you start photo editing. A standard PC has a different gamma setting than the standard MAC. As a result, any photo you process on a MAC will look 'darker' on a PC. you can adjust this in the settings panel of your MAC if you get one, but do be careful about this and check how your photos look on internet explorer on a PC.

Unless there is a specific need for a PC, get a Mac. If you old PC had the capacity to do everything you wanted then you do not need to get the latest and greatest Mac and the cost will more affordable. If you choose a PC, get the latest and greatest because of Vista.
To add a little credibility to the statement above: I left Tech support management about 5 years ago after 20 years of supporting PCs, Macs & Unix systems. My son has all 3 running in his house and he uses his Mac about 80% of the time.
Good Luck!

Actually, I like both.

At school, I use only mac (I am doing a multimedia conceptor formation). I like it. The design is really good and it s very easy for using. I am also looking to buy one, but I think they are a bit expensive.

Teachers also says that mac is good for graphism and photography, so finally I think it depends of what do you want to do. If it s for photography, it s good, but like my dad can't buy a mac because for his job he needs some softwares, that you can't have on mac.

But, I have photoshop and illustrator on my PC at home, and it works well.

^^

Quote:on the new Macs you may run a windows copy with bootcamp

Yeah! I'll buy a Mercedes and install a motor from BMW because I like driving a BMW......

The option to run WIN on a new Mac is great and a big benefit for people who have/want to use WIN-software. But for me the big benefit of using a Mac would be NOT using WIN......

Made the change to i-mac in Oct 07.. Needed new computer, the horror stories I heard about VISTA helped me make the switch. It took a while for it to break me in, but after that I now use the mac exclusively very happy with it.

You will not be disappointed. I have been using different macs and all worked fine. Aperture is just a great tool to handle thousands of images. I just can recommend. No reinstall and other blue screens known :)

I have used an iBook G4 laptop for the past 3+ years,

and you couldn't give me a PC. Well, actually you could

give me one, but I would sell it and buy a Mac.

Good luck with whichever you choose.
